Gathering of Strangers

We stopped by The Photographers' Gallery today to check out the artists shortlisted for this year's Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, and then wandered from the gallery's new location just off Oxford Street toward Piccadilly Circus. Around the back of the Royal Academy, a glowing sign seemed to label the bustle of the street below and the group of statues above with equal relevance,

and we were surprised to see that the building was a new gallery space for Haunch of Venison, a gallery that already occupies an incredibly gorgeous space nearby. In any case, we'll have to remember to return to check out the show after it opens in a few days, both to see the art (from 40 artists) and the space (all 21,500 square feet of it). Our next stop was at Sprüth Magers, where the always-entertaining Peter Fischli and David Weiss showcased a selection of older rubber sculptures as well as more recent unfired pieces.

We passed a covered arcade that we didn't remember passing before,

and stopped in at Connaught Brown when we spotted their front window. Actually, the window piece, Grand Tête de Femme au Chapeau (1963), ended up being my favourite in the exhibit:
